Kerkstra Precast, Inc. is a PCI certified precast-prestressed concrete producer. Kerkstra produces superior precast/prestressed concrete products, including solid and insulated sandwich wall panels, hollowcore and solid floor plank, balconies, beams, columns, truss systems, highway sound walls, FHA J hook median barriers, manholes, septic tanks, ADS Pipe, as well as custom specialty precast products to meet the increasing demands from the construction industry. These products are used in many different applications - industrial, commercial, retail, educational, office, institutional, recreational, and residential. Produced at two locations, Jenison and Grandville, Michigan, these manufacturing facilities are equipped with the most state of the art equipment in the industry today.

History

Larry Kerkstra, Chairman of Kerkstra Precast, Inc. started in business as owner/operator of Kerkstra Septic Tank Co. in 1962 with three employees. By 1970, the company outgrew its original facility so an additional piece of property was purchased and a 6,800 square foot building was built at 774 Chicago Drive, Jenison, Michigan. A batch plant was installed using a reconditioned mixer from a redi-mix truck. In 1975, Kerkstra Septic Tank Co. acquired precast forms and began the construction of manholes, septic tanks, and catch basins for road and sewer contractors.

By 1978, the Company again outgrew its facility and purchased eight acres of industrial land at its present site, 1330 Chicago Dr., Jenison, Michigan. A precast concrete plant was built with 7,800 square feet of production space and 3,750 square feet of garage space. At this time, Kerkstra Precast was incorporated and the Company acquired additional land soon after.

In 1986, Kerkstra Precast added to its line of products prestressed hollowcore concrete floor planks for the building construction industry. These "planks" were manufactured outside with Spiroll™ extruder machines on three 400 foot long steel beds. The Company continued to experience sustained growth during this time.

In 1991, Kerkstra Precast formed a Field Division to erect its building products and service its customers more completely. In 1997 Kerkstra expanded to a site in Grandville, where a state of the art production facility was built to manufacture its products. Fully automated PCE equipment was installed to manufacture 4-foot wide hollowcore plank with depths of 8”, 10”, 12” and 16”. In addition, this new plant had the ability to produce structural beams, columns and walls.

In 2000, due to increased demand for structural building systems, Kerkstra Precast added another 40,000 square feet to the plant in Grandville. This expansion increased production capability and flexibility that is needed to better serve the Company's customers. All told over 100,000 square feet of production space is now inside a climate controlled, safe and efficient work environment - a huge improvement over the days of working outside in the elements.

In 2006, Kerkstra Precast added an additional 25,000 square feet of offices to its Grandville location. All building product's employees now have offices attached to the plant to better service the production staff and in the end the customer.

Going forward, Kerkstra Precast will continue to develop their abilities to provide total precast structural products. They will work to provide budgeting and design help in the very earliest stages of project development. The 2006 addition was not the last, Kerkstra Precast is growing everyday to help serve you, our customer, in the best way we can.
