KP Wins the PCI Design Award for our "All Precast Concrete Solution"
POSTED OCTOBER 27, 2015 in Company News
Kerkstra Precast, Inc. has been recognized in the 53rd Annual PCI Design Awards Competition which showcases design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete.
Kerkstra Precast’s project, Gordon Food Service Home Office, has earned ‘All Precast Concrete Solution’ in this year’s competition. The project team includes Owner – Gordon Food Service, Architect and Engineer– Integrated Architecture, Structural Engineer – JDH Engineering, Civil Engineer – Exxel Engineering, Precast Specialty Engineer – Ericksen Roed, Precast – Kerkstra Precast and Gate Precast, and Contractor – Dan Vos Construction Co.
The new facility consists of three main areas that include test kitchens, meeting spaces, and offices that are all linked by a light-filled connector zone; this zone features a curved-glass curtain wall to transition between the spaces. The building structure, floors, and exterior walls are all made of precast concrete.
Early on, designers decided to use a raised floor hollow-core precast concrete system, which added several performance and economic benefits to the project. “The precast concrete floor system was a perfect fit for this approach as it proved to be the lowest first-cost solution with the fastest construction time,” says Scott Vyn of Integrated Design. In addition to acting as the structural system for the floor, the underside of the precast concrete panels provided a paintable finished ceiling. That meant the need for a typical layer of cast-in-place concrete to create the finished floor level was eliminated as the raised platform sits directly on the panels. Vyn’s team estimates that this decision alone saved roughly $1 million and weeks of construction.
Using precast concrete for the new headquarters also provided aesthetic versatility for both the exterior and interior of the building, he says. The exterior’s architectural precast concrete cladding, combined with the glass and metal curtain wall, helped provide the rich, modern and timeless appearance. In addition, the use of long clear spans helped open up the office area; as a result, it provided the owner with virtually limitless options for office configuration, Vyn says. “The great thing about this project, in addition to the staff at GFS, is the timeless longevity that I am confident this building will enjoy.”

Broadmoor Project Featured in Grand Rapids Business Journal
POSTED MAY 28, 2015 in Company News , Customer News, New Projects, Progress
An article about Broadmoor was in the Grand Rapids Business Journal.
“It’s being built with 100 percent pre-cast walls with 24-foot clear heights, 50-by-50 column spacing and ESFR (early suppression fast response) fire protection,” said Chris Veneklasen. “The building will (be) good from an insulation factor, performing well from a heating and cooling standpoint because of the pre-cast walls … so it’s energy efficient, as well.”

Kerkstra joins AltusGroup; bolsters availability of CarbonCast Enclosure Systems in Midwest
POSTED APRIL 17, 2015 in Company News , Miscellaneous
Seventh precaster to join organization in last two yearsBETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 16, 2015) — Kerkstra Precast has become the seventh precast concrete manufacturer to join AltusGroup® in the past two years, bringing the total number of North American precasters in the organization to an all-time high of 19.
Kerkstra will manufacture CarbonCast® High Performance Insulated Wall Panels and CarbonCast Insulated Architectural Cladding in its Grandville, Mich., production facility just southwest of Grand Rapids. With more than 50 years in the construction products business, Kerkstra Precast specializes in structural and architectural precast for a wide variety of building types in the Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois markets.
The CarbonCast portfolio of enclosure products uses C-GRID carbon fiber grid as a shear connector to provide outstanding thermal efficiency, continuous insulation and full composite action to exterior walls while maintaining the remarkable aesthetic flexibility of precast concrete. The trend for thermal and energy efficient enclosures is anticipated to continue into the foreseeable future.
“Another high-quality precaster in the Midwest gives architects and the entire building team another source for CarbonCast technology in a part of the country that recognizes the inherent value of precast concrete,” said John Carson, Executive Director of AltusGroup. “The proven team at Kerkstra will definitely add to our technical and marketing resources moving forward.”
Greg Kerkstra, president of Kerkstra Precast, said, “CarbonCast will be an excellent technology addition to the Kerkstra portfolio and further position us for the increasing demands for higher performance precast products in the Midwest. The technology has proven itself to be highly efficient, effective and cost-competitive versus other systems in the marketplace. We are excited to see our customers benefit from this new technology.”
AltusGroup precast concrete manufacturers have installed more than 34 million square feet of CarbonCast surface area on over 900 structures since introducing the technology in 2004.
The first-ever national partnership of precast companies, AltusGroup was founded in 2003 to develop, manufacture and market precast innovations such as the award-winning CarbonCast® line of products featuring C-GRID carbon fiber grid reinforcing. With more than two dozen structural and architectural locations in the United States, the 19 North American and three international AltusGroup companies have an unparalleled network of manufacturing plants, technical staff and sales personnel to ensure architects, engineers and contractors get the help they need—and the quality and performance they expect—when they select CarbonCast products. For more information, visit altusprecast.com or call 866-GO-ALTUS.
(Editors’ note: Since issuing a news release in November 2014 about Armtec becoming the 19th AltusGroup precaster, one of our companies – Central Pre-Mix – has elected to identify itself as a plant location of its parent company, Oldcastle Precast – Building Systems Division, as opposed to a separate precaster which would lower the previous count to 18.)
