State: Michigan Completed: 2011
Spartan YMCA’s design and construction team are no strangers to precast concrete. They are well aware of the many benefits of the product and they fought hard to ensure the building was designed and constructed with precast concrete products. The YMCA representative as well as the architect and contractor had been involved with the Wolverine Worldwide YMCA in Rockford, which was also a precast concrete building. They were impressed with the excellent schedule, building durability and overall ease of use of the already constructed building and were insistent on another similar building which is exactly what happened.
Spartan YMCA’s total precast structure consists of 17,500sf of precast insulated wall panels, 40,000sf of hollowcore floor plank, 2000lf of precast beams, 1,300lf of precast columns and 48,000sf of precast double tees. All of the precast products in the pool area were produced with rust inhibitor to avoid any problems due to the high moisture content in that area. Overall, the project was a success and provides the YMCA with a durable, yet aesthetically pleasing building that will last for generations.
The Kerkstra team pulled together and delivered all of the parts and pieces necessary to complete a challenging project and a great addition to the Wyoming community!
