State: Michigan Completed: 2012
Zaragon West is a thirteen story building featuring 80 loft apartments and two levels of above grade parking. Economical enclosure of space, speed of construction and sound separation between adjoining units were the main challenges the designers faced when working on this project. Precast was able to help solve each of these issues effectively. The precast structural system consisting of structural demising walls and hollowcore floor plank effectively formed the structure while providing finished walls between units. This eliminated the need for interior framing and finishing. The 11 stories of precast concrete were erected in roughly 12 weeks helping keep this project in line with the very aggressive construction schedule.
"Kerkstra is a team player. The Kerkstra employees and consultants who completed the Zaragon West project were diligent and paid attention to the finest details. Before a single piece of precast was fabricated, they completed an intricate coordination process for structural walls and hollow core plank. During fabrication, they hosted the project Owner and Architect for a plant tour and inspection of work in progress, just to make sure that all parties were satisfied with the fabrication procedures and the finished product. Once it was time for delivery and installation of the precast, Kerkstra successfully met the requirements of a very aggressive schedule."

“Precast concrete has definitely proven to be one of the fastest erecting building materials available. The 11 stories of precast concrete were erected in roughly 12 weeks, enabling this project to maintain a very aggressive construction schedule. The precast concrete hollowcore floor planks have a very high inherent STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating, eliminating the need for extra, expensive sound-dampening insulation and other costly additions between floors.”
