Gordon Food Service Headquarters
State: Michigan Completed: 2012
The Gordon Food Service Corporate Headquarters was originally designed with a steel structure and a raised flooring system to accommodate the IT, HVAC and Electrical throughout the building. As the design progressed, the team realized that when hundreds of people and computers are in one area on one floor, the issue of vibrations becomes a concern. According to the owner and designer, there’s nothing worse than a rattling computer screen. They began their search for a rattle-free raised flooring system. The designer then realized that the raised flooring system was not the problem, the root of the problem was in the structure. With the 40’ spans required in the building’s design, the structure would be subject to a higher level of vibration. If the team could find a replacement for the structural element; they would eliminate the concern of vibrating computer screens.
This is where Kerkstra Precast came in – a precast structure is able to accommodate long spans without the vibration. As soon as the team heard about this, they were sold. The drawings were reconfigured and the building was constructed as a total precast structure with architectural precast cladding and glass curtain wall. The precast system provided not only a rattle free workspace, but the long spans and tall ceiling heights that the owner desired.
Kerkstra precast came up with a wonderful solution for a precast building, giving us the ceiling heights and spans that we wanted. They were also able to give us an exterior precast product that was in my mind, over the top. Consistency in the color was very important and their guys nailed it! They battled some very tough weather conditions on a heavy clay site and everyone on the Kerkstra team from production to erection to coordinating schedules proved to be a world class outfit!
